Rebuilding Together Muscatine County, Inc. has a chance to make some extra money by busing tables at Boonie’s this coming Monday, June 22nd. Can you lend a hand? The hours are 5 pm-9 pm, so we would love some help from volunteers. Work all four hours, or work just one or two — whatever you can do to help will be great!
While we’re clearing up, we’ll have a chance to educate even more people about Rebuilding Together and what
it does for the city and the county.

Wear your shirt – Have some fun and support a great cause —
Rebuilding Together Muscatine County, Inc.

If you can help, just come to Boonie’s on Iowa Avenue at 5 pm Monday, June 22 (or whatever time you can come after a busy work day), and we’ll put you to work. RTMC will be given a percentage of the money earned that evening, so tell your friends and families to come and help support both Boonie’s and RTMC.

THANK YOU!

Another Letter to the Editor

April 29, 2015

Hello again Muscatine,
I get to write another letter to the editor of The Muscatine Journal. This one is to tell everyone what a great bunch of people showed up Saturday, in the rain to volunteer to help with the projects planned by Rebuilding Together Muscatine County. If it had not rained we were going to tear off and replace siding, put in a sidewalk, and all the homes we work on get some gardening, these were the projects that did not happen.
Painting inside one home did happen; a deck was torn off and rebuilt in the rain, a new bathroom was put into the Miracles Can Happen Boys Ranch by some of the men on the Muscatine Police Force. A crew that was planning to tear out and replace a bathroom floor and a kitchen floor and build a front porch and ramp postponed these jobs to Sunday and instead went to Wapello and put in a handrail for a senior man so he can get up and down the stairs safely.
The volunteers of this community continue to amaze me. With the crews on Friday and the ones that came in the rain on Saturday we had 110 people come together to help where they could. As we gathered in our building to start the day I heard no grumbling or complaining only questions of what we will do instead of what was planned. Again they stepped up and did what could be done in less than favorable conditions. The gardeners came back yesterday and finished what the rain prevented them from getting done on Saturday.
KWPC AM 860 and 95.1 FM Radio with Millie in the morning and I can’t forget the Tony Tone Show were very supportive and made several announcements about National Rebuilding Day and I am sure that is where a lot of the volunteers heard about us. The lunch was provided by the Pizza Ranch which is always a good place to eat.
Rebuilding Together is reminiscent of the old barn raisings that took place before pole barns came along. A neighbor needed a barn and his neighbors would get together and help him build one. RTMC pulls people together that have never met to go and help a family or a widow lady that they have never seen. The feeling at the end of the day is tired to your bones but a feeling in your heart that you know you did something that will make someone safe and warm and they will know some people care about them, they are not alone.
Again, thank you to all who came to help and simply got things done because as we say here “It Just Needs Done”

Letter to the Editor

April 28, 2015

During the course of the year I am responsible for corresponding with a lot of people and organizations, some with good news and some not so good. This type of letter is my favorite to send. I get to tell the city of Muscatine and the surrounding communities what a great place this is to work, play and raise a family.
On Friday April 24th a group of people from Kent Corp came to a home on Jackson Street and tore off the existing roof and replaced it with a new one. Sounds simple, right? Well not quite, the one that was on the house was leaking but with many ideas and suggestions a solution was reached and the work was 98% finished before the rain came down.
At the same time this roofing job was being done, just up the street a sun shield was being built over the deck belonging to an senior, vision impaired lady that couldn’t use the deck because the sun burns her. The guys from Kent Corp designed and built a frame work and covered it with fiberglass panels that let in the light but keep out the harmful rays of the sun.
This is the second year Kent Corp and Rebuilding Together Muscatine County have worked together to help low income families. The crew from Kent Corp, some engineers, some plant workers, some office workers and I don’t know where all come to the job sites with a can-do attitude and they simply get the job done. It is a pleasure to work with such a great bunch of people. Their ability to assess the situation and carry it through to completion is fun to watch.
While these two projects were being done in close proximity to each other there was a third taking place. Half a dozen men from Van Meter Industries (VMI) were at the home of a lady whose front porch/deck was in need. They had to remove the structure that was there and build one from the ground up. After discussing what had to be done they tore off the old one, dug the holes and built the new one on the same footprint but one that is much stronger and safer for her.
This is the first time this group from Van Meter Industry has worked with RTMC but I hope it isn’t the last.
Part of my job is finding the right job/project for the right group but with the two corporations we had the pleasure of working with this time I would be hard pressed to find something they wouldn’t tackle. Just because they hadn’t done something like this before is no reason not to jump in, figure it out and carry it through.
The teamwork of both of these companies is evident in the way they worked together.
Thank you to Rich Dwyer from Kent Corp and Bob Estabrook from Van Meter Industries for bringing your people to a RTMC project to help people that couldn’t afford to have done what we all accomplished on Friday April 24th, 2015.

Employee Spotlight: Frank

Featured Article

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’re celebrating our employees who collectively volunteered more than 113,000 hours of service in 2014.

We’re spotlighting two Monsanto employees who received The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) this year. Today we’re featuring Frank of Muscatine, Iowa. Check back on Friday to read about Mary of Centralia, Ill. site. Together, they gave more than 1,250 hours of their time for community outreach.

Frank has worked as a production technician for more than 18 years at the Monsanto site in Muscatine, Iowa. He finds joy in sharing how his group has helped to change the neighborhoods they live in. For National Rebuilding Day this year, he’ll lead a crew to work on improving eight homes and a children’s shelter.

Q: Which organization do you volunteer with?

A: I am the founder and executive director of Rebuilding Together Muscatine County. We are part of a national organization that works with low-income homeowners to rebuild and modify their homes.

I started the local chapter of Rebuilding Together in 2007, as a Leadership Muscatine project with the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It all began when the co-chair of our local Meals on Wheels program – knowing I like to build things – connected me with an senior client whose porch was in bad shape and in need of repair. After figuring out the cost, we decided to rebuild his porch; we had such a good turnout and so much fun that we did it again for another client the next year.

Q: Why is volunteering important to you?

A: I have always believed that we can all help each other. I like to find a person that needs something, find another person that has what that person needs, and bring the two together. Rebuilding Together does this by bringing communities together to help those among us that are less fortunate.

Q:  Tell us a story from your volunteer work that has had a big impact on you.

A: Since the start of the group in 2007, we have worked on close to 60 homes and non-profit centers. To pick one story is difficult, but there is one from 2014 that I will remember for a long time. The homeowner, a 48-year-old Spanish man, was thrown from a horse and paralyzed from the chest down – he could only move his arms. His family rented the only ramp they could find – one for $100 per month, which was too steep for him to navigate by himself. We went in, took the existing ramp out and built one for him according to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Standards.

That day, a translator wasn’t needed – despite the language barrier, we could see the gratitude through his and his family’s laughter, tears and applause. You see, for the first time in two years, this man was finally able to go outside, descend the ramp and travel along the sidewalk all by himself. I don’t speak any Spanish but when he motioned for me to come over, hugged me and wet my shirt with crying and laughing, I knew exactly what he was saying.

Q: What have you learned from your volunteer work?

A: There are a lot of people who, through no fault of their own, have been kicked and kicked again by life. Whether they are facing poor health, job loss, or a tragic accident with little or insufficient insurance, we need to remember that people are usually not low-income by choice; something has happened to them. Our tagline is “It Just Needs Done.” I have said this for years and now this whole group repeats it when asked why we do what we do. Our goal is to keep people safe, warm and in their homes.
