Rebuilding Together Muscatine County Has a New Home!

January 3, 2013

After five years of working from different locations in and around town and storing inventory and supplies in various basements and garages of volunteers, Rebuilding Together Muscatine County (RTMC) has received a 10-year lease for the Annex. Not familiar with the name? It’s the former Pickett School on the campus of Crossroads on Houser Street.

Remember the blue-tarped roof you used to see when traveling Houser? Well, the blue tarp is gone, and now RTMC has office space, a meeting room, storage, and even space for a workshop, all under one roof. We have even been given a pole barn on the Crossroads’ campus for inventory overflow.

Rebuilding Together, the national organization, believes that everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy home. Nearly 200 affiliates across our great nation, including Rebuilding Together Muscatine County, provide critical repairs, accessibility modifications and energy-efficient upgrades to low-income homes and community centers at no cost to service recipients. Some larger affiliates do this year-round, but all affiliates participate in one day each year called Rebuilding Together Day. RTMC’s workday is the last Saturday in April, and this year that is Saturday, April 27th. RTMC helps Muscatine County residents who need repairs made to their homes, but who do not have the necessary funds to make those repairs and nowhere else to turn. If they qualify for assistance, RTMC makes their homes safe and warm at no expense to them, home by home, block by block.

RTMC has reached out to community businesses to ask for help with funding to add a roof and paint the exterior of the Annex as soon as weather permits. HNI answered that call by awarding RTMC a sizeable grant, with the stipulation that the funds be matched with additional contributions or in-kind donations. You can help RTMC secure the grant from HNI by mailing your donation to our new address: Rebuilding Together Muscatine County, 1424B Houser Street, Muscatine, IA 52761. RTMC has no paid staff, and all funds will either be used to make our headquarters attractive and safe or for supplies needed for Rebuilding Together Day in April.

If you are able, please help us by sending a donation to RTMC at the address listed above. And, remember to mark your calendar for Saturday, April 27, for Rebuilding Together Day. Help those in our community who most need our help: the low-income senior, homeowners needing accessibility modifications, veterans, and families struggling to provide for the basic necessities. Join this worthwhile cause of neighbors helping neighbors. You’ll get a T-shirt, a free lunch, the knowledge that you have helped make your community a better place to live, and just a warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you have done the right thing. As we all know, community begins at home.

A Big Thank You!

April 28, 2012

It stormed all night, but not all day!
Thanks to all who showed up this morning and helped with yet another successful National Rebuilding Together Day!
The homeowners were WELL pleased.
The volunteers were warm as long as they kept moving.
What an amazing bunch of people you are!
As one of our home owners told me today ,

“Look out there. In my yard. So much compassion!

I will never forget what they have done here today!”

Together they stand to make a difference Rebuilding Together: Muscatine  County could use some helping hands to give some homes a little TLC

Cynthia BeaudetteThe Muscatine  Journal |                                        Posted: Tuesday, April 17,  2012 10:30 pm

MUSCATINE, Iowa —What does it take to rebuild a county? For starters, how  about a hammer, a shovel and a willingness to work?

If you have one or all of those, organizers at Rebuilding Together Muscatine  County have a spot for you on Saturday, April 28.

That’s the day the local chapter of the National Rebuilding Together  organization plans to complete projects at four area houses and two non-profit  centers.

Since its founding in 2007,  by executive director  Frank Iliff,  the non-profit Rebuilding Muscatine County has helped more than 30 low-income  homeowners who needed repairs.

Rebuilding’s recipients include the disabled and senior, at-risk families  with children, veterans and active military members.

To make the best use of time and resources, volunteers with all types of  talents and ideas are needed, said Deb Iliff, Frank’s wife, and volunteer  coordinator for the organization.

“Even if you can’t do electrical work, you can pick up a rake,” said Deb  Iliff. “And if you’re too young to use power tools, you can pick up trash.”

She added there is also a need for ambassadors. These are people who sit and  talk with the homeowners while the work is being done.

“One couple we worked with had lived in their home for 50 years and had spent  a lot of time alone,” said Deb Iliff. “Then they had all these people at their  house, and it was a big change. One of our volunteers spent the day with that  couple and kept them company.”

Volunteers will receive lunch and a T-shirt, and may even  learn some  new skills.

Some people put together a group from their workplace, said Iliff, or  families form teams, as do groups and organizations. Walk-in volunteers are  welcome the day of the event, but teams have a better chance of working together  at the same site when they sign up by Saturday, April 21, said Deb Iliff.

Applications are available at:

— Calvary Church, 501 W. Bypass Iowa Highway 61

— Muscatine County Extension Office, 1514 Isett Ave.

To learn more about volunteering, contact the Iliffs at  or call 563-260-3143.

Volunteers will meet at 7:15 a.m. on National Rebuilding Day at the  Rebuilding Together Muscatine County headquarters, 205 Cedar St.

Donations can also be mailed to the Rebuilding Together Muscatine  County  headquarters.
